vCISO service saves a US healthcare provider $19.75M over three years.

A 30-day vCISO assessment and roadmap saves ~$5M in year one, $19.75M over three years.

// Client overview

A well-known US-based healthcare organization providing a wide range of services across multiple specialties, known for personalized, holistic care. It uses many digital systems to manage patient data and deliver care, making protection of that data a significant focus in the most-targeted industry for cybercrime.

The organization's senior leadership were aware of the cybersecurity challenges but needed to better understand the current reality and determine ways to mitigate risk. Inspira provided a two-part solution to identify weaknesses and strengthen the security posture.

// Key challenges
An ever-expanding data estate of patient data, including PII, electronic health records and financial data.
Malicious outsiders or insiders perpetrating data theft for financial or other malicious gain.
Open vulnerabilities in legacy digital systems and outdated, unpatched software.
Poor cybersecurity hygiene among staff - weak passwords and sensitive information shared via email.
A complex network of vendors and tools that was hard to manage and secure.
An operational burden on technical staff causing costly mistakes, burnout and high attrition.
// The solution · highlights
Part 1 - vCISO cybersecurity assessment: in 30 days Inspira's security professionals assessed the client's technical and data stack, evaluating risk posture and identifying priority gaps.
The assessment reviewed the vendor and third-party network and its risks, the risks of a wide range of poorly integrated cyber tools, vulnerabilities in data and legacy systems, and people-related process blind spots.
Part 2 - vCISO advisory: Inspira recommended reducing the vendor network to a trusted 3-4 vendors with appropriate SLAs, restructuring vendor contracts, and rationalizing digital and cybersecurity budgets to remove duplicative spend.
Staff were trained on cybersecurity best practices through security-awareness programs, with a high focus on documentation and policies to create a common cybersecurity language.
Tools operating in silos (access management, endpoint, DLP) were consolidated under one Microsoft platform to simplify management and reduce staff burden.
// Outcome & benefits
A two-year roadmap was created for identity and access management, data loss prevention, and the foundations of a cyber PMO and GRC.
Almost $5 million was saved in the first year, with a forecast $19.75 million saved over three years in cybersecurity and digital expenses.
The vendor network was optimized to reduce third-party risk.
The organization closed many security loopholes, strengthened its defenses and became better prepared for the evolving security landscape.
